The campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong transformed into a battlefield on Tuesday night after the vice-chancellor of the University Rocky Tuan failed to broker a ceasefire deal between police and anti-government protesters.
Police were heard addressing the vice-chancellor through loudspeakers asking him to leave the premises for his safety.
Footage shows police firing tear gas and protesters throwing ignited Molotov cocktails while hiding behind self-made barricades.
Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
